Dear EUCASS members and friends,
Eucass is pleased to inform you of the publication on 27 March 2025 of the first volume of our Honorary President's book “a history of rational thought” (“une histoire de la pensée rationnelle”) , published by EDP Sciences, only in French for the time being.
How has rational thought developed over the centuries? Physics has undoubtedly made a major contribution. This series of 4 books offers a history of the discovery of the concepts of physics by those who built it. Accessible to all, this grand narrative also offers the scientific reader demonstrations from the original texts, by Archimedes, Eratostenes and others, respecting the spirit of the time but reformulated in today's mathematical language. At a time when science is regularly called into question, it seems necessary to shed new light on mankind's quest to understand the inner workings of the sensible world, to take a clear-eyed look at the difficulties overcome and the paths travelled, and to learn from them in order to be better prepared for the great challenges of the coming years. The first volume deals with the joint development of physics and mathematics between prehistoric times and the appearance of the first form of algebra in India. Philosophy, astronomy and engineering will play a crucial role in this process, which is closely linked to the myths and political developments of antiquity. Readers may be surprised to find that most of the obscurantist issues that resurface today had already been seriously addressed before the Middle Ages. You can also consult the original texts in the bibliography, which refers you to sources that can usually be consulted online. You can find this book directly on the EDP Sciences website: https://laboutique.edpsciences.fr/produit/1475/9782759836932/une-histoire-de-la-pensee-rationnelle or in bookshops and on online book sales platforms.
